At Jackson Prep, daily competition breeds success.
Golf is an individual sport, but as a team, Patriots' golf is stacked. This year’s squad features three SEC signees and another commit.
"It’s great you know when you have a bunch of players that are kind of your skill set to play a round," explained Cecil Wegener. "It just makes everyone that much better. You’re just trying to out work each other."
Two of the Patriots four future SEC golfers will play at Ole Miss next season.
Senior Cecil Wegener and 3-time Mississippi Junior Amateuer champ Charlie Miller have been playing together since the 7th grade.
Yeah it’s great," said Wegener. "Charlie’s been one of my best friends for a while and it’s gonna be a lot of fun playing with him next year."
"It’s awesome, we’re really excited just to get up to Ole Miss," said Miller, also a senior. "We have a good time, but it’s always competitive too, we’re just always trying to beat each other but also there’s a competitive edge it to it as well."
And don’t sleep on the team’s other SEC signee.
As the only girl on the boys team, future MSU Bulldog Blair Stockett plays a key role for the Patriots.
"I’m not sure they (the boys) were thrilled until the first match," said head coach Nell Bradford. "She came in with a score that helped us win and then it was okay. They were happy to have her.
"I get to see the guys," said Stockett, another senior. "They obviously hit it a lot further, so that kind of pushes me just to hit it further and get my game to the top of its level."
With over two decades of coaching experience at Prep, Bradford has seen her share of players. But top to bottom, she says this might be the most impressive collection of talent she’s ever coached.
"Absolutely, anytime you have three signees to SEC schools and another one committed to an SEC school, that’s four out of six, that’s pretty awesome," added Bradford.
Sophomore Simms Abney has committed to play at Alabama after he graduates.
