When someone mentions that the state needs to retire its offensive flag, flag supporters quickly say we already voted on that. It doesn’t matter that the vote was taken nearly 15 years ago, and a lot has changed since that decision.
There are also many elected leaders who support keeping the flag and use the vote to back up their defense.
If that’s the case, then those elected officials should also support a state lottery. After all, Mississippi voters approved it… back in 1992. Mississippi is now one of only six states without a state lottery. Alabama is the only other Southern state in that category.
The state is struggling financially and a lottery would generate tens of millions of dollars. When the jackpot grows, the money from Mississippians traveling to the border to purchase tickets could be put to good use right here.
So instead of creating a special committee to discredit the lottery, to support personal views, just do what Mississippians asked for nearly 25 years ago. It’s time for Mississippi to start a lottery and stop giving those millions of dollars to our neighbors.
