Mississippi State 1st baseman Rooker wins Ferriss Trophy

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi State's Brent Rooker has won the Ferriss Trophy, which is given to the state's top college baseball player.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior first baseman leads the Southeastern Conference with a .415 batting average, 20 homers, 28 doubles, 73 RBIs, .873 slugging percentage and 18 stolen bases.

Rooker's impressive season has helped Mississippi State to a 34-22 record, including a 17-13 mark in the SEC. The Bulldogs are the No. 5 seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament and will face Georgia on Tuesday.

Rooker, from Germantown, Tennessee, won the award over four other finalists, including Southern Mississippi's Taylor Braley, Matt Wallner and Dylan Burdeaux and Delta State's Zack Shannon.

Rooker is the fourth Mississippi State player to win the Ferriss Trophy in the past six seasons.
