CONSIDER THIS: Social Media

Kingston Frazier.....Source: Family Kingston Frazier.....Source: Family

The horrific news last week of the murder of 6-year-old Kingston Frazier rocked all of us. Losing a child is one of the worst things that could happen to a parent and I can’t even begin to imagine the pain Kingston’s family is experiencing.

What happened on many social media sites after this heinous act just makes this terrible tragedy even worse. Rumors began to spread about Kingston’s mom, about law enforcement, about how he died. What happened is so shocking that it’s understandable that people want immediate answers, to find out who is responsible, how it could happen, to place blame on someone.

And it is important for everyone to expect answers, that’s what we do at WLBT every day. However, there was no proof of many of the allegations, just people speculating, then other people sharing those false accusations without any concern whether those comments were accurate or truthful.

Social media is a great way to connect, but it also a great way to destroy. Hate loves to hide behind an anonymous keyboard. If you can’t confirm something is factual, don’t share it. And encourage the person who posted it to take it down.

As Kingston’s family mourns, let’s support them, and show them their community cares. Let’s use our online voices to uplift them, to speak the truth.

That applies today and in the future. Let’s all think and confirm before we post our comments and stop the hurtful rumors and gossip.
