JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In light of the recent tragic death of 6-year-old Kingston Frazier, who was killed after he was kidnapped inside his mother's stolen car, a video of a St. Louis 6-year-old pleading with his community to stop gun violence begs the question: Are children overexposed to violence?

And what can we do to stop that?

"People need to stop killing each other around here," pleads Jeffrey Laney, a St. Louis six-year-old who speaks in a video that's now gone viral. "Because this is just making me feel bad, because I don't want nothing to happen. I'm scared to die."

It can be difficult to control a child's exposure to violence on television and social media, but it's important to do your best to limit that intake.

"It does fall on the parents up until a certain age, and then I think it's largely out of the parents' control," said Gerald Maples, a parent whose children grew up in an age with far less social media exposure.

"My kids, they have cell phones, but they have the parental thing on it to keep them from viewing certain things," added Rosemary Collins, who helps raise her two three-year-old grandchildren.

Mental Health Counselors say abrupt and extreme changes in behavior might signal a child has gone through an emotional trauma.

"They become easily brought to tears, and their tears may come out, or their emotionally upset over something that usually is insignificant," Dr. Dorothy Jeffries Anderson, a mental Health Counselor in Jackson.

Luckily, Laney is able to vocalize his fears, so his parents can respond.

"All these people out there killing each other, you need to stop this," says Laney. "I'm a kid. I'm not supposed to be knowing all this stuff."

Experts say it's important not to discredit those fears.

"As a parent, educator, or caregiver, you want to be honest, truthful, and just answer the question that they're asking," said Dr. Tishawn Thames, a Certified Child Life Specialist.

You can search "child grief counselor" to find a mental health counselor in your area. A list of child therapists in Jackson can be found here.
