DURANT, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Storm victims in Holmes and Montgomery counties won't be seeing in FEMA money to rebuild.  The governor's recent request for individual assistance was denied.

“We are shocked, we are appalled," said Mayor-Elect Dr. Henry Robinson, Jr. "We knew we would get this money to help out people and to hear that we are not getting it is a slap in the face.”

City leaders in Durant couldn't hide their frustration after hearing the disappointing news that storm victims were not approved for individual assistance. The decision comes more than three weeks after storms rolled through the area leaving behind a destruction and devastation.

“The money was badly needed," added Robinson. "There are a lot of people who don't have flood insurance, so these people won't be able to get housing.”

That includes people like Carl Rocket. His home was also destroyed and he has no money to rebuild it.

“We need the government assistance," said Rocket. "We need the county to step up. It is not fair, simple as that.”

He hopes FEMA will hear his cry and have a change of heart to help the community.

“It is heartbreaking. I am really disappointed," added Rocket. "The average people will have to try to move on, but it is disappointing knowing our government letting us down like that.”
