JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The series Shots Fired looks at the layered investigation of police shootings in a North Carolina community and features a Jackson resident in its cast.

Yohance Myles spoke on his role in the show, and the show’s role in furthering national discussion.

"Fox did an awesome job with allowing us to get behind the lense of the autopsy part of the investigation, looking into our criminal justice system," said Myles.

Myles plays Leon Grant, on the Fox series Shots Fired, whose son is a part of the police investigation.

"So we find Leon in a crisis of trying to protect his family by any means necessary," said Myles. "The scrutiny that comes from that, his loyalty to his community, and where that goes. Again, it’s a sensitive conversation that we’re having about African-American boys and the idea of law enforcement and racism.

And the series boasts an impressive cast, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Hunt, and Sanaa Latham, but no time for Myles to appear starstruck on set.

"More so than being starstruck, it’s what do you bring to the table," explained Myles. "And to make sure what you’re bringing is going to work with the group as a whole.

Shots Fired is ambitious in its themes, hoping to start a dialogue more than just to entertain.

"As much as Fox has other things that are entertaining, I’m glad that we took a different approach to put something out there that is close to home," said Myles. "And also, a dialogue. Something that never goes away, that involves everyone. Take race out of the picture, it’s a conversation you and I could have. It’s a conversation our communities could have. It is something I can say to my sons, my daughter, my family, outside of the many things you’ve seen me do, here’s a project you can pull out and you can say ‘Wow, Dad was a part of something that hopefully changes the world.’

Myles's acting credits include parts in the movies 2 Guns, Grudge Match, and This Is The End. He's also a professor at Jackson State.
