RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is still trying to determine what led to a deadly car crash in Clinton that killed two Jackson State University students last week.

We attended a candlelight vigil in Raymond for one of the victims. Friends and family members said the legacy of 21-year-old Jonathan Thomas and 19-year-old Skylar Liddell will forever live on.

"We are going to release balloons in Jonathan's honor to begin our grieving process," said Marqua Lofton. "We are going to let him go and so he can gain his wings and we can let go of our grief, at least start. We are just going to let his light shine for as long as possible."

Hours after Liddell was laid to rest Thursday, the Raymond High School Class of 2014 gathered in front of Raymond High School creating an atmosphere of love and respect in honor of Jonathan Thomas.

"We went to Jackson State together," said Aleisia Summers. "He was always just a happy person. If you knew him, he would put a smile on your face."

The two Jackson State University students were killed this month in an overnight car crash that ended on North Frontage Road near the Natchez Trace in Clinton. Friends and family said Thomas will always be remembered as a basketball standout.

"I think that everybody who knew him could say he was a loving, caring person," said Sammie Chapman. "He was great at sports and a great person well rounded overall. He affected a lot of lives and made a big impact here, so we wanted to say our goodbyes."

Clinton Police requested the Mississippi Highway Patrol to investigate the accident. MHP said the investigation is still ongoing.

The funeral for Thomas will be held Saturday at Hill of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bolton. The service starts at 11 a.m.
