JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Several children in Mississippi's foster care system are getting help as they transfer and transition from home to home.

The Jackson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority hosted the "Caring Cases Suitcase" Drive outside the Mississippi Children's Museum Saturday.

"Foster care is something that has been in existence for a long time and it is not going away anytime soon," said organizer Yolanda Walker.

More than 150 new suitcases, tote bags and other carrying cases were donated Saturday. This luggage will benefit foster children who reside at the Methodist Children's Homes.

“All the time there are kids that are in custody that the state can't find placement for and that is where we step in as the children's home," said Mandy McCollough with Methodist Children's Home. "We have 30 kids that live on our campus and we also have a foster care program.”

“As long as there is neglected and abuse in biological homes, foster care will be a strong need in the community,” said Walker.

The Delta Chapter have hosted this community service event for five years. They say most of the kids living in foster move more than once and usually they don't have suitcases for their belongings, so this gives them something permanent to hold on to during this tough time.

“It is traumatic enough to be displaced by your family. Then you are moving with your belongings in trash bags, so we are trying to build self-esteem,” said Walker said.
