LINCOLN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Lincoln County is still reeling after the weekend murders of 8 people. Many folks came out to the Lincoln County  Sheriff's Department to pay their respects by bringing flowers to lay on the patrol car of slain deputy, William Durr.

He was a two-year sheriff's department veteran and former police officer in Brookhaven. Residents say they have never had a tragedy of this magnitude happen in their county.

"It's going to take a very long time for the community to heal because you have orphans now, people left without parents, grandparents," said Rosalind Dillon.

"I know it was just one of those things," said Kenneth Collins of the Brookhaven Police Department. "And it still hurting in my heart because I know the May's and I know all that was involved and the Wells. Rev. Edwards and his family, it is just hard for the community. I know God will bring us through this darkness."

Community members say they are planning vigils this week for the 8 people killed.
