YAZOO CITY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One person is dead and another in still in critical condition after a car was hit by an Amtrak train in Yazoo City Monday night.

The driver of the car has been identified as Jerry Welch, of Jackson. Welch is currently in critical condition at UMMC.

The crash happened at the 20th Street Railroad Crossing and the car was pushed about a mile down from the impact.

Police are waiting to talk to Welch to get the identity of the passenger that died, since there was no ID on the man at the time of the crash.

According to Andre Lloyd with the Yazoo City Police Department, the driver of the car disregarded the arm at the crossing and went around it, when they were hit.

Police say the train had video cameras on it that should show them the moments leading up to the accident, so they can know for sure what caused it and how it might have been prevented.

"We're looking for if that individual driving the car went around the track - went around the arms - to make sure he didn't do anything illegal to cause this accident," said Chief Lloyd.

They're hoping to get that video Tuesday or Wednesday.

Both people inside the car were airlifted to UMMC.

Police warn to be extremely cautious when driving near train tracks.

"Sometimes you're trying to beat the train, you see the arms going down, you try to get up under there real fast. But you don't know how close the train is; you don't know the speed of the vehicle.," said Chief Lloyd.

This is a developing story.

We will update this as more information becomes available.
