An investigation is underway into the death of a former mayoral candidate in Meridian.
Mariner Durant was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound on Monday. His body was found in a wooded area near a home on 14th Avenue in Meridian.
Investigators say the initial examination indicated the shot may have been self-inflicted.
Durant was a former Libertarian candidate for mayor, who dropped out of the race due to what he called "safety reasons".
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security, the Meridian Fire Department and a Meridian Fire and Explosives team were seen at the home.
City officials have also confirmed that MBI called in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to assist in the investigation after bomb-making materials were found on site.
Multiple agencies are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
