MUSKOGEE, OK (KJRH/CNN) - Shanda Heatherly and her husband started a non-profit with a simple mission: to build houses for homeless veterans.

The first of what they hope will be many tiny houses to shelter veterans is nearing a move-in date. A veteran with severe PTSD will soon move out the car he is living in and into the home.

"It's been a dream come true," Heatherly said. "My husband and I have wanted to do this for quite some time."

Heatherly and her husband were formerly homeless.

"Somebody helped us, so we wanted to help all the veterans," she said.

Their charitable idea resonated with dozen of volunteers who came together last week to build a tiny home in just three days. The veteran who will eventually move in also helped with the construction.

"He helped paint. He helped put up the walls. He helped put up the two-by-fours. He helped put up the siding," Heatherly said. "He helped with a lot of it."

Heatherly's work isn't done yet. The inside of the home still needs furnishing, and she plans to build many more for other homeless veterans."

"We're still looking for five acres because we want to build a community," she said.
