JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Living in Jackson can be a struggle, especially for those suffering from allergies.

For the second year in a row, the Capital City ranks among the top five worst places for people with allergies.

"I came back, took the test, and found out I was basically allergic to Mississippi," said Jackson resident Brandon Mitchell.

With spring, comes flowers and trees in bloom and now with the weather warming up, people are also starting to kick on those air conditioners again.

If you haven't changed your filters recently, the air in your house or car could be dirtier than the air outside.

"The problem could actually be in your house,” said Doctor Justine Turner with Turner Care. “It could be dust mites or house mites that you don't really see and if you are sleeping with the problem, you're going to wake up with the problem."

For some of us, we can find relief with over-the-counter medicines, but for others like Brandon Mitchell, it takes monthly shots in order to live comfortably.

"With me being a vocalist, I can really tell when I'm singing if there’s a lot of drainage,” Mitchell said. “It kind of hindered what I do.”

Dr. Turner says untreated allergy symptoms can lead to other, more serious illnesses such as sinus infections or pneumonia. He believes it's better to take an over-the-counter medication or an allergy test to see what you are allergic to before the problem progresses.

According to pollen.com, pollen counts have dropped a bit due to rain.

Over the past few days, the Jackson metro area has seen a medium to high count pollen levels. The top pollens are Oak, Grasses and Hickory.
