JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The state of mental health in Mississippi is under review.

The Mississippi Mental Health Task Force met on Tuesday to talk about what they can bring to the state legislation.

Everything from families, crime and overall mental health were discussed, and they also talked about what the state can do to better equip themselves in the future with people suffering from mental illness.

State Attorney General Jim Hood met with each sub-committee, addressing all fronts for tackling the issues.

"Unfortunately the legislature has made so many cuts," said Hood. "We lost 624 employees at the Department of Mental Health last year, so those cuts, especially the opioid epidemic that's hitting, there's so many needs out there. We're hoping to go to the legislature next year to change some of the nuts and bolts, things that don't cost money."

The federal government has also been a big pusher for the state to address their approach to mental health.

They even went as far to sue the state of Georgia, and that suit cost millions of dollars according to AG Hood.

"You know, we're sued by the federal government for not providing mental health out in the communities," he said. "It cost the state of Georgia $225 million to try and rectify the problems that they had, and so to get the legislature to understand that, they just kick the can down the road.

According to Hood, they expect some other legislature to fix the problem, and just ignoring it is just causing the tax payers more money.

"It's just frustrating to see politics get involved when there are needs out there," said Hood. "Those needs cost us one way or another. Lets fix the problem."
