RICHLAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Fire crews were on the scene of a fire at Millbrook Cricket Farms on Old Highway 49 in Richland. The old building was mainly made out of metal, but housed wooden boxes to carry the critters for potential buyers all over the world.

Richland Fire Chief Brandon Weems was on the scene and noticed the fire was enclosed in the old building, but growing and getting hotter.

"Upon arrival, our first attack crews inside the building made it approximately 60 feet in and met a heavy load of fire. Also a heavy load of materials within the structure, wood materials for a heavy fire load," said Weems.

People that work next door to the fire smelled smoke earlier and then saw flames on top of the building. The fire was so big that the Richland Fire Department had to call in help from other stations.

There were over 30 firefighters on the scene.

"This is a pretty good size building," said Chief Weems. "So it definitely taxed our people. We called in additional resources. We want to thank the Pearl Fire Department for coming. We gave an off duty page to our guys who were off duty and had them come in."

Fire marshals are still investigating the cause, but after talking to firefighters, they said that the building had several large heating units running to keep the crickets at a certain temperature.
