JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With a vision to help kids learn, the Mississippi Vision Foundation vows to provide free eye exams for students who have failed their reading exams.

"She says 'when I don't have my glasses on, the world is very blurry to me. I don't understand it. I can't think when I don't have my glasses'," said mother Chandar Turner of her daughter. "That's heavy for a 12-year-old to say."

The Mississippi Vision Foundation says it often takes a child either falling behind in school or a string of bad behaviors before a parent or teacher realizes the student could have a vision problem.

"It can mean the difference between moving easily through school, graduating on time, pursuing future education and training and becoming a productive, engaged citizen," said Mississippi Optometric Association's Executive Director Linda Ross Aldy.

The foundation reports one in every five students need glasses to help them achieve success and they hope to help those students by providing free eye exams.

Jackson Public Schools parent Chandar Turner says both of her girls now wear glasses and it's changed their lives completely.

"She says 'Mama, I don't think. I shut down when I don't have my glasses. When I put my glasses on, everything comes to life. Everything comes alive. It's my personality. It's a part of me'," explained Turner.

Thanks the Vision to Learn Program, 76 Oak Forest Elementary School Students received new glasses and the Mississippi Vision Foundation is planning providing free eye exams through July 31.

They are focusing on free testing for third graders who have failed their reading exams, but they vow to help any student or parent concerned about a child.
