MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Madison police are on the hunt for four men believed to be sidetracking shoppers to steal from them.

Investigators believe the men may be running a scam to actually rob customers inside stores, but Sam's Club shoppers are on guard.

"It's sad because as parents you know and as consumers we have to think about these things," said Sam's Club shopper Liz Torres.

The Madison mom wasn't surprised to hear about the Madison police probe into an attempt to steal from a shoppers purse after the men involved were captured on surveillance photos.

Investigators say a woman was shopping when she got distracted by a Hispanic man who started a conversation with her.

Another Hispanic man reportedly then reached into her purse which was in the shopping cart.

She saw what he was doing and yelled, frightening the men away.

"I do try to always kind of keep my purse on me, strapped around me instead of leaving it in the buggy just because I've heard of these things happening," added Torres.

According to Madison PD, the two men targeting the shopper exited the store and were joined by two others who left the parking lot in two vehicles.

"It's a big concern, worries me," said Tosha Starks of Canton.

The Sam's Club shopper is shocked the larceny attempt was made at the Madison store, but she too takes precautions.

"When I'm going to do anything as far as make groceries, buy supplies, I always carry this," said Starks, while lifting up a small cross body purse.

"I carry it around my shoulder, or I can just put it in my shirt," she said. "That way I don't have a problem whenever I turn away, my purse is in the open. I don't have that problem."

Police are encouraging everyone to be on the lookout for the suspect vehicles.

One was a white 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with Massachusetts license plate 5DM185.

The other SUV is a gray 2017 Hyundai Tucson with California license plate 8BCD927.

If you have any information or if you seen these men contact the Madison Police Department at 601-856-6111.
