Press Release from the Mississippi Braves
The Mississippi Braves shutout the Jackson Generals in the series finale at Trustmark Park on Monday afternoon. Mississippi won the game by a final score of 4-0 and also earned a 3-2 series victory against the Southern League leading Generals.
Mississippi got off to an early start when Jonathan Morales launched a towering solo homerun deep over the left field wall off of Jackson starter, Ryan Atkinson, giving the M-Braves a 1-0 lead. For Morales, his homerun in Monday's contest was his first of the 2018 season.
The M-Braves extended their lead 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning after Luis Valenzuela doubled on a fly ball to center field, allowing Daniel Lockhart to score.
Mississippi rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning by adding two insurance runs. Valenzuela and Connor Lien both scored in the bottom of the seventh when Michael Reed sent a scorching ground ball single into left field. Officially, Valenzuela scored on the hit by Reed and Lien scored after Jackson left fielder, Jose Vinicio was charged with a fielding error after mishandling Reed's double.
Mississippi starter, Enderson Franco (1-2, 3.68) earned the win after a stellar performance on the mound. In 5.0 innings pitched, Franco limited the potent Generals offense to just four hits. The right-hander who has recently made the transition from the M-Braves bullpen to game five starter, did not allow a single run, walked three, and struck out seven Jackson Generals batters. Atkinson (1-2, 4.08) suffered the loss for Jackson. Mississippi relief pitcher, Kelvin Vasquez was credited with his first hold of the season.
