WESSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Six years ago, Skylar Laine stole our hearts and cemented herself in Mississippi history on American Idol. Placing in the top five, then moving to Nashville to record an album independently, you might say she had it all.

But she tells us, something was missing.

"Pounding the pavement and doing all that, it just wasn't making me fully happy. I just wanted to come back to Mississippi," she says.

As Skylar, now 24-years-old, talks to Fox 40 News from her home in Wesson. She explains that true happiness ended up finding her, when her husband Christopher James, and her two stepchildren, 10-year-old John-Brayden and 6-year-old Jackson, entered her life. The boys live with Skylar and Chris every other week.

Chris says, God had a plan all along.

"We both intervened at a point when we were kind of at each other's lowest, when it came to figuring out our future," he says.

Chris, a 1st Lieutenant with the Mississippi Army National Guard, wears many hats: he's an Iraq veteran, Officer in Charge of the Guard's Yellow Ribbon Re-Integration Program, a pastor, and a chaplain candidate.

The 35-year-old also has a story about a unique courtship. After his divorce, he met Skylar in November 2016 through a mutual friend on Facebook, and had no idea she had dazzled the nation on Idol.

Skylar admits, she was the one who initiated contact. When they began dating, they made a pact.

"We didn't even kiss until we knew we were going to get married. We were very adamant about building that foundation of trust, compatibility and friendship," Chris tells us.

They were married one year later. Now they're best friends, inseparable, and... expecting!  Skylar is having a baby in early December.

The family has plenty of time before the big arrival. Until then, you can find Skylar at home on most days, preparing meals for the family and taking the boys to school.

"They fell in love with us together, and I spend so much time with them," she says.

The house already belonged to Chris. He grew up in the home that his grandfather built, then bought it from a family member, and now the couple will raise their children here.

Skylar still enjoys singing for crowds, and says she'd love to dive back in one day. But first will come nursing school, her expanding family, and excitement over where fate may take her next.

"I'm doing wonderful, and it is the best season of my life," she says.
