JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One south Jackson resident is not happy with two abandoned properties...one on each side of her home.

Shameka Fox says not only do they make the city look bad, they're also dangerous.

She has been trying to contact the owner of one of of the two properties, which is next to her mother's house on Belvedere Drive in south Jackson.

When she was finally able to get through to him he said he was on his way back to the United States from Mexico and would give her a call back.

"This is the grass. It's growing up the house," she says, pointing to the area around one of the abandoned houses.

Because the yards aren't being maintained, Fox says vermin have become a problem.

"They need to come and clean up their yard," she says while standing in front of the second abandoned house.

Fox says there is something else that has become a real safety concern.

"This is where they sit at," she said. "By the garage over here."

On many occasions, she says she's seen men hanging out at one of the houses for hours at night.

In some areas of Jackson, seeing abandoned homes is just as common as seeing potholes.

In fact, at the intersection of Greenview Drive and McDowell Road, there are five of them.

Fox says she has reached out to the city multiple times but gets the same answer, "I'm sorry but there is nothing that we can do."

She says, that just isn't good enough.

"I, Shameka Fox," she says as she's looking directly into the camera. "I am warning that if they don't take action within 60 days of this interview, I assure you that I will take civil action against the city of Jackson."
