Alcorn State standouts Norlando Veals & Timothy Gardner invited to NFL Rookie Minicamps

Press Release from Alcorn State Sports

Former Alcorn State University football student-athletes Timothy Gardner and Norlando Veals will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of National Football League (NFL) teams at 2018 Rookie Minicamps.

Gardner will first attend camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars next week and also with the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers. Veals has earned a shot at camp with the Washington Redskins.

They’ll be looking to join De’Lance Turner as undrafted free agents in the NFL. Turner has already signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

A staple to the offensive line, Gardner was named to the HBCU All-America First-Team and SWAC All-Conference First-Team in 2017. He anchored an offensive line that helped Alcorn lead the SWAC in both total offense and rushing offense.

The Indianapolis, Indiana native heavily aided the Braves in racking up 461.3 yards per game and 237.4 rushing yards per outing – both marks were top-10 in the country. He also blocked for running back Turner who broke the school's single-season rushing record with 1,357 yards on the year which was second-most in the country.

In 2016, Gardner was named to the All-Conference Second-Team. He was part of an offensive line that saw Alcorn rank top-10 in the nation in sacks allowed, giving up just 0.90 per game. He also played a vital role in the Braves ranking No. 17 in the country and second in the SWAC in rushing offense.

Veals, a wide receiver, led the SWAC in receiving yards per game with 81.7. He etched career-highs of 253 receiving yards and three touchdown catches against MVSU.

A product of Brookhaven, Mississippi, Veals was named to the 2017 All-Conference First-Team and also was an HBCU All-America Honorable Mention.

Veals led Alcorn with 901 receiving yards on the year. He hauled in 49 catches and seven touchdowns including a long of 66 yards. Veals also caught seven touchdowns in 2016 while leading the team with 617 yards.

Alcorn has had 52 student-athletes play in the NFL. The most recent was Emmanuel Arceneaux in 2011.
