JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There are several events happening around the state on Thursday to recognize The National Day of Prayer. Many gather to pray over our state, those who govern it, and the people as a whole.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m., city leaders and residents will gather at the Capitol downtown on State St. There will be worship and prayer from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The main event will start at 4:00 p.m. with Governor Bryant and other leaders praying for the state.

The public is invited to the event held in the Ridgeland City Hall Garden starting at 12:00 p.m.

Attendees will be treated to special choral performances by the Olde Towne Middle School Choir. Prayers will be offered for the nation and national leaders, military, state and local government, and the community by local pastors.

All are welcome to come and pray. The program will end by 1:00 p.m. For more information, check out their website here.

Since 1952, the first Thursday in May has been a time when people all throughout the United States gather together "to turn to God in prayer and meditation," on the National Day of Prayer.

The Attala United Ministerial Association will hold a gathering at Redbud Springs Park on S Natchez Street from 12:20 pm – 12:40 pm.

If it rains, the event will be held at the Attala County Courthouse.
