JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Shots were fired Thursday evening at the Lil Lonnie balloon release at Edwards Avenue and Rockdale Drive in Jackson.

Family and friends from all over city of Jackson gathered outside with balloons and candles to mourn the rapper's tragic death.

Jackson rapper Lonnie Montrel Taylor, who was well-known in the community as "Lil Lonnie" was shot to death Sunday, April 29, while driving on Montebello Drive in northwest Jackson. Taylor was a 22-year-old student at Jackson State University. 

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, officers responded to a scene on Montebello Drive where a car had crashed into the front of a home.

Police learned that the back of the car had been shot into by an unknown individual as it traveled down the street. There was a female passenger in the car who was uninjured.

Police are investigating the shots fired at the vigil but so far no injuries have been reported. According to Sergeant Roderick Holmes, all Jackson hospitals have been checked and there is no evidence of anyone being shot.

There are no known suspects or motives at this time. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department or call CrimeStoppers at 601-355-8477(TIPS).
