JACKSON METRO AREA, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Ben and Erin Napier, stars of the HGTV show Home Town, were special guests at the Mississippi Mercantile event Friday afternoon.

The Mississippi natives renovate homes in Laurel, Mississippi.

The Napiers attended Jones Junior College and later transferred to Ole Miss in 2007.

They started renovating their homes between 2008-2011.

Since then, they have renovated 21 homes and plan to work on 13 homes this year.

The Napiers weren’t always involved in the real estate business. Ben worked as a wood worker and Erin worked as an artist.

Erin said they renovated their own homes out of necessity, and it wasn’t long after that an HGTV employee discovered their Instagram and proposed doing the TV show.

The Napiers said they initially thought the HGTV executive reached out to them to buy something from Erin’s stationery business, but they were shocked to find out about the opportunity to do a TV show.

“Nobody expects they’re going to make a TV show for a career,” Erin said. “So, it was just a happy surprise and it still doesn’t really feel real.”

Filming for the show takes place in Laurel and the Napiers say they’re proud to showcase the great things about small-town living.

“We wouldn’t have done this any other way,” Ben said. “We told our production company the only way we could do it is if it highlighted not only our small town, but also our state in a positive way. People tend to look down on small towns and say they’re dead and there’s nothing happening there and we wanted to show things are happening and things can be huge there if you want to make them.”

The Napiers also said they’re grateful for the opportunity to help others in Laurel.

“To be able to not only help people find a home and renovate it, but then also to showcase other small businesses in town and showcase our craftsmen, it’s a huge honor,” Ben said.

“My favorite result of the show is the way it changes perspectives on small town living,” Erin said. “We get emails from people all over the country who say I’m in small town Indiana and I want to get involved in my town more, and that means the world.”
