VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Vicksburg man who was transported to the hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds when his home was shot into this morning has died from his injuries.

Police responded to 1314 South Street around 4:20 a.m., where they learned that the home was shot into multiple times.

21-year-old Cortez Denzel Hardy was transported to Merritt Health River Region Medical Center in critical condition, where he died from his injuries around 3:38 p.m.

Friends and family on South Street are all saying the same thing: "The community lost a good one today."

Hardy went home after his closing shift at Church's Chicken and fell asleep on his couch. The front of his home was then shot into multiple times, hitting him in the crossfire.

Rodney Dillamar, who works at the store on the corner of his street remembered 'Tez for being one of the good guys in town.

"Tez was a quiet guy, a good guy," said Dillimar. "He helped people in the neighborhood, senior citizens, young folk. Didn't bother nobody, he was always smiling, good kid."

According to Dillimar, Hardy was a hard-worker, "just a kid that was always there for you."

His manager Daphine Smith and friends at work all found out about his death from his family, and they too are grief struck but will also remember 'Tez for the good times he brought to work.

"Very funny person to work with, he entertained us all through the shift, he was just a very lively kind of guy," said Smith. "Real real sweet, until you asked him a question. And then oh my goodness, it was all day long. Yep, all day long, very sweet."

Smith reminisced about a time when Hardy was late for work.

"He came from one of those good families in Vicksburg. His mama was on him to work hard and do something," said Smith. "I remember one time he was late for work and I called her. She said 'he's late?' Minutes later, he showed up to work with sleep in his eyes but ready to go to work. I laughed, but he worked his behind off. Just good people."

Police believe there may be as many as two shooters involved.

Vicksburg police are asking for the help of the public to locate and identify suspects in this incident. If you have information, please call CrimeStoppers at 601-355-TIPS(8477) or submit a tip online or by clicking here.
