Press Release from Southern Miss Athletics

Southern Miss had two of its baseball players honored Monday as junior third baseman Luke Reynolds garnered the Conference USA Hitter of the Week award, while junior right-handed pitcher Nick Sandlin collected a National Player of the Week nod by the publication Collegiate Baseball.

Reynolds won his second weekly honor by C-USA by hitting safely in the first three games of the week to improve his hitting streak to a team season-best 13 games, before having it snapped in the Sunday finale at UAB.

He scored in all four games to continue leading the league with 55 runs, while also registering four home runs over a three-game span, including his third two homer game of the season to start the week against Tulane. He now has 12 home runs on the season to lead the team.

Despite not reaching base with a hit in the UAB finale, Reynolds did walk twice and got a free pass three times during the week, while also getting hit by a pitch four times to improve his season’s on-base percentage to .534, which is the best in C-USA. With his eight RBI during the week, he took the team lead in that category with 51.

As for Sandlin, he tossed his second-straight, as well as his second career, complete-game shutout in limiting UAB to six hits, two walks and a hit batter. Sandlin ran his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 32 as he overcame developing a blister on his throwing hand early in the contest.

The Evans, Ga., native fanned nine, including seven over the final five frames, in the tilt to improve to 7-0 on the year. He has now fanned 106 in 2018 and walked just 10 batters. He ranks among the nation’s leaders in both strikeout-to-walk radio (10.6-1) and strikeouts per nine innings (13.25).

This was the fourth time this season Collegiate Baseball has acknowledged Sandlin during their weekly awards.

The first-place Golden Eagle do not have a midweek contest, but return to action when they take on second-place Louisiana Tech in a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park this weekend. Ticket for the three=game series can be bought by going online at, by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office weekdays between 8 a.m., and 5 p.m., as well as calling the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK (8425).
