JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A bridge closure causing a detour through a Jackson neighborhood has some residents taking drastic measures to slow down speeders.

Residents on London Avenue decided they would make their own speed signs to slow down drivers who are using their street due to a closed bridge on Meadowbrook Road.

The residents are using different colored magic markers, catchphrases and slogans to get the drivers to slow down.

The creators of the signs say they are working, but the amount of traffic driving through their neighborhood is also a concern.

Some are worried that the passing traffic won't yield for small children or people walking in the road.

"We are kind of a good cut through," said Elizabeth Quinn, creator of the signs. "The traffic picked up so much and cars were just flying down it. I guess everybody thinks, because of the detour, they have to make up time, so they end up flying down the street.  Some of the moms and I talked about how it had gotten so dangerous quickly."

Some of the other neighbors in the area are also taking a light-hearted approach to the street closure.

Someone has now placed a sympathy card on the sign warning motorists about the detour.

It reads "RIP bridge".

No word yet on when that bridge will be fixed.
