VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A hail of gunfire directed at a Vicksburg home took the life of one person, and the hunt continues for the killers.

Round after round entered the South Street home of Cortez Hardy while he was in the living room early Sunday morning.

Monday, Vicksburg police detectives returned to the scene of the fatal shooting that took the life of the 21-year-old in the city's fourth homicide of the year, just one shy of the noted five in 2017.

"It hurt me you know, because I called him my baby or Little Tez," said Polly Gray.

The 59-year-old was devastated to learn about Hardy's death, a young man who worked at Fastway Convenience Store and Church's Chicken that she described as caring and kind.

And even more disturbing, she believes she heard the gunfire that took his life.

"I was awakened you know and I heard some shots or something that night, but I live like maybe four, three blocks away," said Gray. "But it didn't dawn on me. I knew it sounded like gunshots, but where, I had no idea."

Vicksburg Police Department chief investigator said Hardy was asleep on the couch when the home was riddled with bullets.

He was hit multiple times and later died at a Vicksburg hospital.

Two others were in the house but were not injured.

Investigators believes two shooters were involved.

"We believe that the shooter was standing in the street," said Sergeant Johnnie Edwards. "So they may have walked there and had a car parked at a short distance, but we're still investigating."

Vicksburg resident Brandy Richardson said it makes no sense to have to fear for your safety in your own home.

"It's getting worse by the day. It's getting closer and closer to home, and I really feel like Warren County needs to do something about it," said Richardson. "It's sad you can't even be in your own home and be comfortable. You have to be scared in your own home."
