#29 Mississippi College knocks off #1 Delta State to advance to Gulf South title game

Press Release from Mississippi College Athletics

The Mississippi College baseball team booked its trip to the Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship Game on Wednesday, May 9 as Kyle Smith scored from second base to hand the Choctaws a walk-off win over in-state and nationally-ranked foe Delta State, 9-8, in 11 innings.

Billy Cameron came to plate with one out and runners at first and second. The Mendenhall, Miss., native laced a shot through the right side.

A pair of Choctaws posted multiple hits in the win led by Kyle Smith’s four-hit effort. Blaine Crim added three hits and drove in five of MC’s nine runs.

The Choctaws struck first in the contest with three consecutive hits headlined by Crim’s two-run triple in the first inning.

Delta State responded with six runs in the top of the third, but Blaine Crim posted a two-run homer in bottom half of the inning to pull MC within two runs at 6-4.

The Choctaws regained the lead at 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth. Crim got the scoring started with a double to left center to score Smith. Crim later scored on a wild pitch Brandon Broussard followed with a single through the left side to plate Hunter Wilson.

After Delta State tied the game in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, Dylan Duplechain responded with a solo home run to left field in the eighth to place MC back in front.

The Statesmen sent the game into extra innings in the ninth as Justin Nussbaum singled up the middle to plate Juwan Burney.

Crim finished a single shy of the cycle in the game. The Mobile, Ala., native had a triple, home run and double. The extra inning affair was the fifth of the season for MC.

Mississippi College faces Lee University on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.
