JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The trial for the man charged in the shooting death of 19-year-old Chris Silas is set to begin on Monday.

Saturday, family and friends celebrated Silas' birthday, remembering a young life lost to gun violence.

If Silas were still alive, he would have turned 21 years old on the day of truck show held in his honor.

Many people who knew him said they bet if he were alive, he would have been in his garage working on anything with an engine. Four wheelers were his favorite.

"He would be in the garage at about four in the morning working on four wheelers," said Silas' mother, Pamela Reed. "Actually he turned my garage into a shop."

Justin Simmons met Chris in the third grade. The two were best friends ever since.

"Ninety percent of the time, we were inside his garage working on four wheelers, trucks, anything you can think of," said Simmons.

Silas was a Mississippi guy through and through.

"Chris loved trucks, he loved his four wheelers, he loved his horses," said Reed. "He was just a god ole country boy."

Saturday was a happy one, but the family says Monday will be difficult. The trial for the man accused of killing the young Silas is scheduled to begin.

"I never realized until it happened to me, that you're seeing it now and it really breaks you down," said Reed.

Chris was shot and killed almost three years ago after an argument broke out during a drag race on Frontage Road.

"We were there and gunshots went off," said Simmons.

Friends and relatives say Silas was trying to break up a fight when he was shot.

"My first thing was to get him in the back of the truck and go to the hospital," added Simmons. "When we put him in the hospital bed I literally blacked out."

Chris' mom says she got the call around 2:00 a.m.

"When I got there one of the nurses asked for my insurance card so I thought everything was okay, but then the doctor came out and said he didn't make it," said Reed. "To bury your child, it is hard."

Lori Gray and her son Ridge were neighbors of Silas and his family.

"I said Ridge come look at the sky, I said it's the most beautiful thing you have ever seen and that's because we have a new angel in heaven," said Gray. "And he said, 'tell me it's not Chris.'"

29-year-old Deion Hicks was arrested and charged for Chris' murder.

To honor his best friend, Simmons did the only thing that he could do: "I saved money and went and bought me a truck."

"I'll tell you, he is the best angel heaven ever had," added Simmons.
