ROSS BARNETT RESERVOIR, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A startling discovery in the Reservoir over the weekend is the missing link to a crime that occurred over two decades ago.

Rusted metal and plastic covered in shells is all that's left of a vehicle that was pulled from the Ross Barnett Reservoir Friday night.

According to Reservoir Police, they were alerted to an unusual SONAR image near the Breakers Condominium by a concerned fisherman.

Police sent divers from the Ridgeland Fire Department to identify the object that the SONAR image was showing underwater.

Shortly after, a car in very poor condition was pulled from the Reservoir.

Investigators were able to determine the car was stolen by using tag information and locating insurance records, which show the car had not been recovered after all these years.

"We used the resources through the National Insurance Crime Bureau," Reservoir Chief Perry Waggoner said. "We contacted one of their investigators they were able to find an old purged file of a stolen vehicle out of Jackson."

The car was identified as a 1989 Mazda RX-7 stolen from Jackson 22 years ago in 1996.

Reservoir patrol officials say they have now turned the case over to Jackson police.

According to Jackson police, they have not gotten that far in their investigation to know who the owner of the car is.
