JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson Public School teacher is now on paid administrative leave after a student accused him of attacking her.

The Office of Campus Enforcement is investigating the fight between an 18-year-old female student and a male teacher at the REAP Program, formerly Rowan Middle School.

The alleged fight happened on the campus Monday morning. The student says she plans to file criminal charges against the teacher.

REAP stands for Re-Engaging in Education for All to Progress. It is designed for students who are over age and don't have enough credits. The program provides an alternative path to a high school diploma.

JPS spokesman Sherwin Johnson released a statement Monday saying:

According to state law, Mississippi Code Section 99-3-28, a teacher cannot be arrested for an incident which occurs during their official duties without a hearing before a judge. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is completed. Student safety remains a top priority in Jackson Public Schools.
