Suspect in 2015 shooting pleads guilty to second degree murder

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The suspect in a shooting that happened three years ago pleaded guilty before a judge Tuesday afternoon.

According to Hinds County Circuit Court Administrator Evelyn Hunter, 29-year-old Deion Hicks pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Christopher Silas.

Silas was shot and killed in September 2015 after a fight broke out following a street race on East Frontage Road in Jackson.

At the time of his death, Silas' sister said one his friends had gotten into a disagreement with someone else over a bet made from the races, so he called her brother to help resolve the situation.

She went on to add that he was walking back to his car when someone shot him in the chest. Silas was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hicks is scheduled to be sentenced on June 26 at 9 a.m.
