Jackson State baseball used a six-run fifth inning en route to a 13-3 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday morning in the opening round of the 2018 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
All the Tigers runs in the fifth inning were with two outs. Junior Tyler Culpepper singled to left field and senior Jarvis Warner walked and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Senior Lamar Briggs then walked to load the bases. Senior Stephan Vidal then earned a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to 3-2. Junior Raul Hernandez put JSU in front with a 2 RBI double through the right side. Junior Dezmond Chumley added an RBI single and senior Jesus Santana added a 2 RBI single to right field.
As a team, the Tigers (33-16) batted 13-for-30 with 13 RBI and nine walks.
Chumley went 3-for-5 with three RBI and scored a run. Santana and Hernandez each finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Vidal batted 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Senior Mark Watson earned the win on the bump. The 6-foot-5 righty entered in relief and tossed 3 1/3 innings and surrendered one hit and allowed no runs and no walks and fanned five batters. Sophomore Kevin Perez started and absorbed the no-decision. He tossed 3 2/3 innings and scattered seven hits, allowed three runs and no walks and fanned two batters.
The Tigers are back in action Thursday with a 3 p.m. bout against Texas Southern.
