VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some Warren County residents are pushing to permanently open the old Vicksburg Bridge, also known as the Highway 80 bridge.

They want it available year around for cyclists and pedestrians.

“This our Grand Canyon, our Eiffel Tower, this is our iconic thing and people who come to Vicksburg, who have not lived on the river, they want to go out across that river,” said Vicksburg resident AJ Buddy Dees.

Friends of the Vicksburg Bridge citizens group is spearheading the push. They say opening the bridge permanently could create more economic development and promote healthy living and tourism.

“Tourism is such a phenomenal thing in Vicksburg,” said Annette Kirklin.

The thoroughfare also known as the old Highway 80 bridge that goes over the Mississippi River is owned by Warren County and operated by a special bridge commission.

The bridge closed to traffic in 1998 because repairs had to be made to the road deck. Now it only opens for special events.

“That bridge is an unused asset with gates closed expect for a few days for cancer benefits and other pedestrians to walk,” said Dees.

Warren County supervisors support the idea, but there are some safety and legal challenges to make this happen.

“The railroad has a lease on the building,” said Warren County Supervisor Richard George.

Funding is also a concern.

“There are grants available and that is under consideration as well,” said George.

The group says they will remain optimistic their push will produce results.

“What a unique opportunity, what a unique community asset that can benefit not only the city of Vicksburg and Warren County, but the state of Mississippi,” said Linda Fondren.
