It’s the great debate of 2018: Do you hear Yanny or Laurel?

Celebrities have weighed in on Twitter, with both Ellen DeGeneres and Chrissy Teigen saying they hear “Laurel”. Mindy Kaling says it’s “Yanny”. Stephen King tweeted he first heard “Yanny”, only to switch sides a few hours later.

It’s a debate that's even divided the MSNewsNow newsroom.

"I heard 'Yanny'", says WLBT news anchor Howard Ballou.

Ballou's co-anchor disagrees. "I heard “Laurel'", says Maggie Wade.

Ballou persists. "I mean, there’s no question it’s 'Yanny'”.

MSNewsNow asked UMMC audiologist Dr. Christopher Spankovich how people can be hearing different things. He explains there’s a number of factors at play, even something as simple as the speakers you use.

"Those different speakers are going to give emphasis to more bass sounds or treble sounds," says Dr. Spankovich. "And that can be a significant factor in what you first initially hear is simply based on the hardware that you are listening through."

But why are we debating so hard? Why can’t we “hear” the other side? Dr. Spankovich blames a medical phenomenon known as the “perceptual magnet effect”.

"When you initially hear that name," says Dr. Spankovich, "it is hard for you to then try to focus and hear the other name being voiced."
