JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The U.S. Surgeon General is making a visit here to UMMC Thursday.

Dr. Jerome Adams is expected to discuss the steps the federal government is taking to address the opiod crisis.

He will be joined by governor Phil Bryant and a panel of experts who will talk about how the epidemic is impacting our state, and what the local government and communities can do to get involved in the fight.

Doctors here at UMMC have been working on a model that would prevent opioid dependency through alternative methods --- like treating pain with non pharmaceuticals, acupuncture, physical and occupational therapy and also giving patients non-opiate medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin and muscle relaxers.

After his visit here to UMMC, the US Surgeon General will travel to Harbor House Chemical Dependency Services, a residential addiction treatment center in Byram, to meet with staff there who work daily to help those seeking help for addiction.
