For the seniors at Jackson Academy, the graduation was filled with mixed emotions following the death of Frances Fortner. The 18-year-old was killed in a tragic accident on Ridgewood Road Thursday, when her car hit an open manhole and flipped. She was on her way to graduation rehearsal.

Her best friend, Emma Ward, who also graduated Friday night, accepted her diploma.

Ward says she pulled people in with her charisma and beauty, but she says, they stayed because of her deep passion and her excitement for possibility, and it was that passion that got her accepted to the University of Missouri’s Journalism program, one of the best in the country.

Frances was described by her parents as being a smart, talented and beautiful. A dancer since the age of 3, she joined Ballet Mississippi when her family moved to Jackson in 2009 and became a principal dancer.

Visitation is planned for Friday, May 25. There will be a second visitation Saturday, May 26 with her funeral to follow.
