CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An investigation is underway into possible voter fraud in Canton and there are questions regarding Courtney Rainey, a member of the Canton School Board -- the same board that fired Superintendent Cassandra Williams Monday.

Canton Mayor Dr. William Truly says the people of his city are angry, and divided over this issue.

Confusion and controversy.

That's how many are describing what's going on with the Canton School Board. Now confusion is turning to turmoil.

"It has caused a lot of divisiveness in our community," said Mayor Truly. "A lot of pain, anguish, concern, tempers flaring.”

Mayor Truly, like others, is asking questions, but not getting many answers.

"Of course I'm concerned about the Canton School District”, said Truly.

The Madison County District Attorney's office confirms there is an investigation under way into last May and June's municipal elections.

Documents show  Rainey has at least two separate residences. One on Foley Avenue in Canton and another for William Boulevard in Ridgeland - the address she used to enroll her child in Madison County Schools.

Truly says there is a different address on an Open Meetings Complaint signed by Rainey against him.

"Of course that address is 371 C. Welch Street, which is in the city," explained Truly. "Which of course is outside of the added territory for which she ran."

Truly says the firing of Superintendent Cassandra Williams has made matters worse.

"It has torn our community apart," said Truly. "Some are for, some are against. I think the most important factor here is how it was done."

Rainey has not returned calls for comment.

We will continue to update this developing story.
