CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This week we told you about the abrupt firing of Canton Superintendent Of Schools Cassandra Williams. The school board terminated her during a special meeting. Now we're learning more about what was behind their decision, from her attorney, John Christopher.

State test score records show under Cassandra Williams' leadership, this district went from an "F" rating to a "D" rating in the first year she was here. Now her attorney says he believed she raised the bar here even higher this year and is being fired for the way she did it.

"The board said they fired her because she acted unprofessional with members of the staff," said Christopher. "Her firing had nothing to do with the children."

Christopher says he believes that some teachers didn't want to be "held accountable".

State test scores show that Williams brought the district up from an "F" rating to a "D" rating in her first year on the job. Christopher believes she has brought the district up even higher in the last year, possibly to a "C" rating, based on reading scores.

Williams and her attorney are asking the school board for a hearing before parents and stakeholders to make public, their version of what happened with her firing. Williams had one more year left on her 3-year contract.
