JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

More people are expected to travel the state's highways this Memorial Day weekend and the Mississippi Highway Patrol says they will be out in full force.

Troopers are pushing their safety initiative "Drive to Survive. Safety checkpoints will be set up at several locations all over the state

If your celebration includes alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver because troopers will be looking for impaired and distracted drivers, speeders and other dangerous drivers in an effort to help reduce accidents.

They'll also be checking to make sure everyone in your car is buckled up.

During the Memorial Day period last year, troopers made 110 DUI arrests and worked 122 accidents on state highways; two of them were deadly. They hope to reduce that number to zero during this year's holiday period.

The holiday enforcement period begins Friday at 6 pm and runs through midnight Monday at midnight.
