HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

People in Hinds County took time out Monday morning to remember men and women in uniform, who died for our freedom.

A touching service highlighted the Memorial Day service, put on every year by the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. It's an event where people get a chance to learn about the county's role in the wars of yesterday. Many veterans come out, and they say it means a lot that they're not forgotten.

"Just the struggle we went through, and giving honor to those who fought for God and their country. It makes you feel good, makes you feel proud," says war veteran Roney Charleston.

"All veterans are great, but the ones who died in combat are dear to my heart because they laid down their life so other people could be free," says war veteran Lee Perry.

The Hinds County War Monument, in front of the court house, recognizes natives who were killed in each modern war. It was established in 1976.
