BROOKHAVEN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One person has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon in the recovery of multiple weapons in Brookhaven.

The guns were found in a wooded area near Exchange Club Park.

Brookhaven police say they went there after a citizen reported hearing gunshots. They found several young people walking nearby and after questioning them, they found six handguns and a shotgun.

Currently, officers trying to determine if the guns are stolen or were used in other crimes.

"When they break in cars, that's what they're looking for," said Chief Kenneth Collins. "They target specific vehicles to break into and we as a community have to do better with securing our weapons. If you have a weapon in a car, lock your car door and keep it out of sight."

Some of the weapons recovered had serial numbers that had been filed off.

Police are trying to return the guns to their owners. If you recognize a weapon that might be yours, you're asked to call them directly.
