JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State investigators are now leading a probe into an officer-involved shooting that took place overnight in Jackson on Calhoun street.

"I was asleep. It was like 12, 1 in the morning," said Kristopher Smith who lives on the street.  "I just heard a lot of gunshots, seemed like semi-automatic gunfire."

Officers swarmed Calhoun street, where markings for shell casings highlighted the shootout involving Jackson police.

Residents on the street ducked for cover.

"I got nieces and nephews in there," said Smith. "I didn't want them to get hurt or anything."

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident.

Spokesman Warren Strain says the man who was hurt in the shooting was taken to a hospital with NON-life-threatening injuries.

Strain says no officers were injured, and it's not clear if any CHARGES will be filed.

Neighbors report seeing officers search a field behind homes, and possibly taking another subject into custody.  One man on the street said he called 9-1-1 when he heard the shots, and dispatchers said, officers were already there.

Evidence collected at the scene will be brought to the state crime lab for further examination.
