Howard Sherman and his wife, actress Sela Ward put on a watch party Tuesday at Weidmann's in downtown Meridian. The group cheered every time a new precinct was counted. Sherman arrived around 9:15 with his wife, Sela at his side. Sherman says the state has change in its future.

In the first poll we did, I had one percent name recognition and now we are neck and neck with the minority leader of the house," said Sherman. "This is unbelievable. This is a huge day. This is a huge statement the state is making that they're ready for change. When we get to the run-off it's a different ballgame."

David Baria is a lawyer who has served in the Mississippi legislature since 2008. He's been an outspoken advocate for improving education and healthcare in Mississippi. He also successfully worked to pass the laws that led to the expansion of craft brewing in Mississippi.

The runoff is June 26.
