Man charged in 2016 nuns' slaying scheduled for plea hearing

HOLMES COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The man charged in the murder of two nuns at their shared home is scheduled for a change of plea hearing next week.

According to Holmes County Sheriff Willie March, Rodney Earl Sanders is scheduled to plead guilty before Humphreys County Circuit Court Judge Jannie Lewis on Thursday, June 21.

Sanders is accused of stabbing Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill to death in August 2016.

Their bodies were found in a home they shared in Durant on Castalian Springs Road.

The women were nuns in the Catholic Church and nurse practitioners at the Lexington Medical Clinic, and they had a big impact in the Lexington area for three decades.

"This is one of the poorest counties in all of Mississippi," said Sister Margaret Held in a video from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

The video highlighted the work they were doing at the Lexington Medical Clinic. It was produced just ten months ago.

"We make a difference in people's lives and we never know what the difference is," said Merrill in the video.
