CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new historical marker has been unveiled in Clinton. The new marker stands at the site of "The Clinton Duel".

A dramatic reading and a re-enactment was performed during the dedication ceremony Thursday morning.

Duels were private affairs, typically attended by a few people, but the Clinton Duel in 1836 attracted hundreds of spectators. It followed the bitter five year political rivalry between President Andrew Jackson and Mississippi Senator George Poindexter.

The feud escalated after Poindexter lost his senate race.

"Poindexter was bitter," said Walter Howell. "At the Governor's inaugural reception, he used a lot of profanity and denounced the President and this led to his supporters challenging Jackson's supporters to a duel. It shows the people of Clinton -- and really the people of Mississippi -- that at one time, sane men fought duels over honor. And in most cases no one was really injured, maybe a slight wound."

In the Clinton Duel, it took three shots before a man was killed.
