STARKVILLE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A settlement has been reached in the accident that claimed the life of Kaelin Kersh of Pearl, according to court documents from the Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk.

Kersh, a former Mississippi State athlete, died last May in an accident involving an officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety will pay $500,000 to Kersh's family and two other young women who were in the car -- the maximum amount allowed by state law.

Kersh was a passenger in the car. The money will be distributed to the families by the Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk's office.

The Kaelin Kersh Act was passed by the state legislature during the last session. It goes into effect July 1, requiring law enforcement traveling 30 miles per hour over the posted speed limit to use flashing lights.
