Unclaimed Money Ads, Officials Say Scam

The Better Business Bureau and State Treasurers Office want you to be on the lookout for paid advertisements about unclaimed money.

State Treasurer Tate Reeves points to a newspaper advertisement as an example. The ad is carefully crafted to look like a real news article. Reeves says the ad misleads readers about the real value of the "unclaimed cash" and directs them to a website where it can be purchased. He said, "You absolutely need to beware. No question about that. Because there are scam artists. We see them out there everyday. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Reeve's office handles all legitimate unclaimed property in the state. About $35 million sits unlaimed right now.  You can call the State Treasurers Office, at (601) 359-3600 for more information.
